The list below shows all potions mentioned by J.K. Rowling in the Harry Potter series; potions not mentioned in the HP series belong to the proper credited creator and HP-Lexicon and their sources. Other potions are credited to listed HOS member(s). These are categorized alphabetically only. Potions created by members of HOS will be listed next to their potion.
[PTab=A - D]
AGING POTION: Causes the person drinking it to grow older. The more Aging Potion one drinks, the more one ages.
AMORTENTIA: The most powerful love potion in the world. The potion smells differently to different people according to what attracts them.
ANALGESIC PASTE: Credited to Lux Belanger of HOS. When this paste is rubbed on the painful location, the pain is relieved immediately. The paste is more of a white cream, quite shiny in colour with the scent of rubbing alcohol, it's moist to touch and when rubbed on turns quite warm. The paste is applied, though it also comes in a liquid that can be drank. Analgesic paste takes a half an hour to brew. The ingredients include Aconite flower petals, boiling water, mint and flobberworm mucus (for thickening into a paste-like substance). Once substance has come to a boil, add flobberworm mucus and stir until reached the desired thickness. Let cool, store in a cool place. If paste is ingested, please immediately take the generic Antidote for Common Poisons.
ANALGESIC POTION:: Credited to Lux Belanger of HOS. This potion relieves generalized pain. This potion comes in a pale colour and tastes like mint. It smells like mint as well. Analgesic potion is a liquid which the user must drink. This takes a half an hour to brew. The ingredients include Aconite flower petals, boiling water, mint. Do not add Flobberworm mucus when making the liquid. If an antidote is needed, take the Antidote for Common Poisons.
ANTI-NAUSEA REMEDY: Credited to Lux Belanger of HOS. A clear, tea-like brew which relieves nausea instantly upon drinking. This potion is not difficult to brew and in fact takes into account common muggle and magical remedies. The ingredients are typically things found within the household (Rice, water, lemon, peppermint leaves and ginger root). The rice is cooked and the water used for boiling the rice is the base of the potion. The ginger root and peppermint leaves are then boiled in the rice water and lemon is squeezed into it. It takes about thirty minutes to brew. Though no antidote should be needed as it is a healing potion, soda crackers can soak up the remains.
BABBLING BEVERAGE: Causes the target person to talk nonsense.
BEAUTIFYING POTION: Potion to make the drinker more lovely in appearance.
BLOOD-REPLENISHING POTION: The potion makes up for lost blood. Taken ever hour until no longer needed.
BOIL-CURE POTION: Simple potion to cure boils.
BREAK DOWN SOLUTION: Credited to Isaac Clarke of HOS. Breaks down a potion so the user can tell what ingredients were used. When brewed properly this potion is also very thick and bright white (a very odd characteristic for a potion). Reason for this is due not only to the ingredients but also brewing process that uses alchemy. There is no odor or anything distinct about the potion except that is appears to be a "blank slate," which is needed when breaking down another potion. When adding the potion you wish to break down to the Break down Solution the potion changes as the alchemy used to brew the solution breaks down the potion back to its original ingredients. It is at this moment it will cause an odor or change color due to the breakdown. This can also be used to test a person's blood to see if they have a potion in their system, and if they do what ingredients were in it. Graduates and adults may brew this potion. It can easily be brewed within a few hours, but it takes a lot of patience which a lot of premature potion makers do not possess. Also, there is a very alchemy-like process to brewing the potion, which makes it a lot more difficult. Everything is very precise. Antidote: Any reversal potion.
BRUISE-HEALING PASTE: Thick yellow paste used to heal bruises.
BURN-HEALING PASTE: An orange paste that is used to heal burns.
CALMING DRAUGHT: Helps calm emotional turmoil.
CONFUSING CONCOCTION: Effect is to cause confusion.
CONFUSING DRAUGHT: Effect similar to that of the Confusing Concoction.
COOLING SOLUTION: Credited to Paul Angle of HOS. Slowly freezes the insides of the target over the course of 48 hours. Antidote: Pepperup Potion if administered within the first 36 hours. Beyond that threshold, Draught of Dragonsbane, followed by a Fire Protection Potion once normal core body temperature is reached. Rehabilitation from cold weather injuries required in that case.
COUGH POTION: Presumably treats a cough.
DEFLATING DRAUGHT: Black liquid, usually delivered by spray bottle, used to knock out Doxies so that they can be safely disposed of. The effects last quite a long time.
DISSOLVING ADHESIVE: Credited to Lux Belanger of HOS. A paste similar to glue, used to hold bones in place while they are being magically healed, best used for children who squirm. Prevents deformities when setting bones. Can also be used as a quick fix for seal cuts and various other open wounds in a pinch until proper medical treatment can be given. The paste is a white sticky substance which dries clear and dissolves, applied to affected areas. To brew: Beeswax and honey water mixed together at high temperatures then cooled to room temperature so it remains in a paste-like substance.
DRAUGHT OF DRAGONSBANE: Credited to Paul Angle of HOS. Slow-acting fire-based poison. Burns the one who ingests it from the inside out. Antidote: Fire Protection Potion
DRAUGHT OF LIVING DEATH: Causes someone to fall into a deep sleep.
DRAUGHT OF PEACE: Calms anxiety and soothes agitation.
DREAMCATCHER POTION: Credited to Starr Clarke of HOS. This potion, when inhaled/drank will prevent the user from having nightmares. The Dreamcatcher potion, when completely properly, will take on a very thin liquid form and be a very pale purple color (due to the Agrippa). It gives of a thick white smoke when brewed properly the smells like faintly like lilies (due to the Asphodel, which is part of the lillie family). The potion itself doesn't taste particularly good when ingested, and is described as tasting like rubber. Overall, however, it is meant to be generally calming. Fifth year or above can brew this potion. It can easily be brewed within a few hours, but it takes a lot of patience which a lot of premature potion makers do not possess. Antidote: Sleep.
DR. UBBLY’S OBLIVIOUS UNCTION: Used to heal scarring left by thoughts.
[PTab=E - L]
ELIXIR OF LIFE: The Elixir of Life extends life, but requires that the drinker consume it regularly for all eternity if the drinker is to maintain his or her immortality.
ELIXIR TO INDUCE EUPHORIA: Induces euphoria in the drinker, with occasional side effects of excessive singing and nose-tweaking.
ET AES POTIO (THE COPPER POTION): Credited to Starr Clarke of HOS. This potion makes the blood of a werewolf taste delicious to a vampire. Must be drank by the werewolf, not the vampire. The potion is a deep red color, almost maroon. It omits a gray smoke that is very potent in thickness and smell, filling a small room with the scent of copper. The potion itself is of moderate thickness, the same consistency of blood. Extremely difficult to brew, should only be attempted by skilled potions makers. Antidote: Time; the potion will last for a few hours. Or a strong finite charm can end it as well.
FELIX FELICIS: Until the effects wear off, all the drinker’s endeavors will tend to succeed. Once consumed, the potion gives the drinker an exhilarating sense of confidence and a tremendous sense of opportunity. However, if taken in excess the potion causes giddiness, recklessness, and dangerous overconfidence, and it is highly toxic in large quantities.
FEVER REDUCING POTION: Credited to Liam Shaw of HOS. When brewed correctly, the Fever Reducing Potion will bring a person's body temperature down to an average 98.6 F. It does not cure the illness associated with the fever, merely aids in treatment. It is not effective on minor fevers (in the range of 99 degrees) but is very useful for high or mid-range fevers. It appears as a dark black, tar like substance that the user must drink. It has a very bitter taste. Following brewing, it must sit and cool to room temperature before being consumed. It is a fairly simple recipe and can be brewed easily and quickly. A word of caution, if used too frequently it could cause brittle bones and heart complications. Take 4 to 5 hours apart and do not exceed 4 uses in 24 hours. Antidote: The Analgesic or Anti-Nausea potions will counteract the effects.
FIRE PROTECTION POTION: Protects the drinker from being burned by magical fire. Although it will work against most magical fire it is useless against Fiendfyre.
GARROTTING GAS: Invisible gas which apparently knocks people unconscious.
GREGORY’S UNCTUOUS UNCTION: Persuades the drinker that the giver is his/her very best friend.
HATE POTION: Reveals the worst faults and habits of the target person to the drinker.
INSTANT DARKNESS POWDER: When thrown into the air, turns the immediate area pitch black so that common light spells and fire magic will not work in the area effect, although a Hand of Glory will.
LOVE POTION: Does not really cause the person who drinks it to fall in love with someone, as it is impossible to manufacture or imitate love. A love potion simply causes the drinker to develop a powerful infatuation or obsession with the target. (see Amortentia)
[PTab=M - T]
MANDRAKE DRAUGHT: This powerful antidote will revive people who have been petrified.
MEDUSA'S KISS: Credited to Paul Angle of HOS. Turns the target to stone. At first glance, it looks much like wet cement, but has a consistency closer to thick paint. No scent to speak of, other than a faint earthy smell. Flavorless, or presumed so. Petrifies on contact. Antidote: Mandrake Draught
MEMORY POTION: Presumably enhances the drinker’s memory.
METANAMNESIS DRAUGHT: Credited to Basil Gray of HOS. Makes a person's recollections foggy. Too much of the brew can induce amnesia.
MORNING SICKNESS REMEDY: Credited to Liam Shaw of HOS. Similar to the anti-nausea potion, this potion will reduce the effects of morning sickness without harming mother or child. When brewed correctly, the potion will be a pale lavender color, somewhat transparent like tea. It will be odorless and flavorless, as to accommodate the sensitivity of pregnancy. For best results, take nightly before bed. It is fairly simple to brew, and if brewed incorrectly will not have any side effects (but it also won't work). The effects wear off naturally, and the lack of side effects makes it unlikely to need an antidote. However any potion designed to remedy illness will function as an antidote.
PEPPERUP POTION: Cures the common cold.
PHOTOGRAPH POTIONS: If normal Muggle photographs are developed in certain potions, the resulting images will move.
POLYJUICE POTION: Transforms a person to look exactly like someone else. One dose lasts for one hour, but doses can be renewed, apparently indefinitely.
QUODPOT SOLUTION: Used in the pots serving as goals in the game of Quodpot to keep the Quod from exploding.
SCAR POTION: Credited to Starr Clarke of HOS. When applied to scars causes them to vanish/heal completely as if they were never there. This potion, when brewed correctly, takes on a very thick liquid form so it is basically a paste. A light brown color it smells terrible when it is completed. Like a combination of burned hair and skin. The potion should not smoke when completed; if it does you brewed it wrong. Seventh years or above can brew this potion. It can easily be brewed within a few hours, but it takes a lot of patience which a lot of premature potion makers do not possess. This potion has a very precise process, and an unpracticed potion maker will not be able to brew it.
SHRINKING SOLUTION: Makes things shrink in size, apparently reversing the aging process as well.
SKELE-GRO: Potion which re-grows bones. The effect takes about eight hours and can be quite painful.
SLEEKEAZY’S HAIR POTION: Used to style hair.
SLEEPING DRAUGHT/POTION: Causes the drinker to fall into a deep sleep. (See Draught of Living Death)
SOBER UP POTION: Credited to Lux Belanger of HOS. This potion cures hangover immediately. The drink is carbonated so that the bubbles help bring up any gas lingering in the belly causing discomfort. A few drops of the anti-nausea remedy is added to the brew to relieve upset stomach from drinking too much and not eating. The drink comes in various colours depending on the types of fruits used (the most common are orange, kiwi, banana, and avocado). It maintains the scent of whichever fruit has been used along with a small hint of ginger. No antidote necessary.
STRENGTHENING SOLUTION: Presumably increases the user’s strength.
SWELLING SOLUTION: Causes something to get bigger.
THIRST DIMINISHING POTION: Credited to Hayden Frost of HOS. This potion temporarily decreases a vampire's thirst for blood. It is not a replacement for blood, as a vampire must feed, however this potion will allow them to postpone their feeding with minimal consequences. Ultimately, it diminishes their appetite. Effects last from 2 hours for a weak potion to 48 hours for the fully potent potion. Repeated use with failure to feed can lead to irritability, weakness, uncontrollable thirst, and sometimes death. The potion is a very thin liquid with the consistency and appearance of red wine. It tastes like blood and smells like the opposite of amortentia, meaning the scents the user finds most vile. It is difficult to brew a long lasting, fully potent version, as it takes over 6 hours to brew a fully potent potion with constant attention. The effects wear off naturally, however any potion with the purpose of curing an illness (for example the Pepperup Potion) will speed up the process.
TRUTH POTION/SERUM: Forces a person to tell the truth.
[PTab=U - Z]
VERITASERUM: The most powerful truth serum available, this colorless, odorless potion (which looks like plain water) forces the drinker to tell the truth.
WARTCAP POWDER: Substance which causes the skin of a person who touches it to form a thick hard crust.
WIT-SHARPENING POTION: Effect is presumably to make a person think more clearly.
WOLFSBANE POTION: While this potion doesn’t cure lycanthropy, it does prevent the extremely dangerous dementia which would otherwise accompany the transformation from human into werewolf.
WOUND-CLEANING POTION: Used on cuts and other open wounds to clean them out.
